Hotties an der Lift 08 (Part III)!

Montag, Februar 11th, 2008

Falls ja, dann solltest Du mal Naymz.com ausprobieren.

We map the city, state, country and name of each visitor to your profile (when available). We’ll also tell you how they found your profile.

Walking down the Campus of Stanford University is just compelling. I’ve met Henrik Bennetsen from the Stanford Humanites Lab in front of the Wallenberg Hall in the Heart of the Campus. Henrik was in a hurry and had only little time to talk, as an organiser of the Metaverse U Conference and the second meeting for the Metaverse Roadmap (both events taking place at Stanford University next week).

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to meeting him again at the Metaverse U: He is expecting famous speakers like Raph Koster or Cory Ondrejka. And for all who are not able to attend – there is still the convenient possibility to follow the Conference via Second Life! I asked Henrik about his general interest in Virtual Worlds, his answer was straight: “You know, I believe that Virtual Worlds are one of the most important traits of the time that we are living in!”

Today I’ve had the pleasure to meet with two very bright women from Sun Microsystems, who welcomed me at the main Campus in Menlo Park: Fiona Gallagher (Senior Brand & Advertising Manager) and Mary Smaragdis (Director Java Consumer Marketing). Before our discussion I was shown all different kinds of products and technologies Sun is mainly working on – absolutely amazing is of course Sun’s Virtual Workspace: As most of the time more than half of all employees of Sun are remote, they have the possibilty to collaborate and talk informally to each other in an immersive virtual environment, also called “Project Wonderland”. I wonder, is that the future how people are working or even living with each other? Of course they are not the only one working on such virtual world collaboration solutions, and I am pretty sure this is going to be huge thing in tomorrow’s way of working with each other.

While still reading Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, all these possibilities and technologies make one feel kind of frightening but totally fascinating at the same time. How will the future of the 3D Web look like? – No one can really predict it…hmm, maybe some can do predict part of it.. :-)

I guess visionaries like John Hanke (Director Google Earth & Maps), Philip Rosedale (Founder and CEO Linden Lab) or Andrew Littlefield (Founder and CCO Doppelganger) would have those kind of insights. I look forward to talk to them next week.

Regards from Menlo Park

Cheers, Daniel

Im Ring mit Robert Scoble!

Freitag, Februar 8th, 2008

Microsoft is Cool and Silicon Valley Ahoi! (Part I)

Mittwoch, Februar 6th, 2008

POST VON DANIEL (Daniel schreibt in regelmässigen Abständen, während seines 3D-Research im Silicon Valley, exklusiv für SwissStartups):

In my quest of the future of the 3D Web in the next few years, I’ve had yesterday the pleasure to visit Microsoft’s Research Campus in Redmond and to meet with Stephen Lawler, General Manager of Microsoft Virtual Earth. I was amazed by his broad knowledge, his visionary thinking and his eloquent talking. Some impressions from the Microsoft Campus are below.

Today I have also been meeting with Bob McNeel, CEO of McNeel and Associates, who are developing and selling the famous and successful Software Rhino 3D, an intuitive 3D design software. A further interesting view gave Alan Hudson, President of Web3D Consortium and Yumetech Inc., a highly skilled and experienced developer.

Stephen of course believes highly in the future of Mirror Worlds but also in other applications of the 3D Web though there will be a lot of technical hurdles to be taken in the next few years. And that Microsoft – with its biggest developer network worldwide – will play a significant role in this field, that might be for sure.

I am curious, which other players are going to be on the show of the 3D Web: Google? Linden Lab? IBM? Alan Hudson gave me one other aspect of a 3D Web application, he believes in 3D training tools as a big potential, which Yumetech Inc. is for example providing for different U.S. organisations.

Currently, I am flying down the West Coast to San Francisco – it was hard to leave Seattle with its lovely folks (that’s probably why I was even too late for the check-in, my chance is 50:50 to have my luggage down in San Francisco). However, I am excited about the famous innovative spirit in the Silicon Valley which I will get to know for sure the first time tomorrw, while meeting with Henrik Bennetsen (Stanford Humanities Lab, organising the Metaverse U Conference or on Thursday with Mary Smaragdis (Marketing Director at Sun Microsystems.

Best Regards from California. Daniel

DurchLIFTen 2008 in Genf!

Dienstag, Februar 5th, 2008

LIFT08 is a three day event to explore the social impact of new technologies. Come to get in touch with tomorrow’s most important trends, those changing our lives and organizations on a daily basis.
