POST VON DANIEL (Daniel schreibt in regelmässigen Abständen, während seines 3D-Research im Silicon Valley, exklusiv für SwissStartups):
In my quest of the future of the 3D Web in the next few years, I’ve had yesterday the pleasure to visit Microsoft’s Research Campus in Redmond and to meet with Stephen Lawler, General Manager of Microsoft Virtual Earth. I was amazed by his broad knowledge, his visionary thinking and his eloquent talking. Some impressions from the Microsoft Campus are below.
Today I have also been meeting with Bob McNeel, CEO of McNeel and Associates, who are developing and selling the famous and successful Software Rhino 3D, an intuitive 3D design software. A further interesting view gave Alan Hudson, President of Web3D Consortium and Yumetech Inc., a highly skilled and experienced developer.
Stephen of course believes highly in the future of Mirror Worlds but also in other applications of the 3D Web though there will be a lot of technical hurdles to be taken in the next few years. And that Microsoft – with its biggest developer network worldwide – will play a significant role in this field, that might be for sure.
I am curious, which other players are going to be on the show of the 3D Web: Google? Linden Lab? IBM? Alan Hudson gave me one other aspect of a 3D Web application, he believes in 3D training tools as a big potential, which Yumetech Inc. is for example providing for different U.S. organisations.
Currently, I am flying down the West Coast to San Francisco – it was hard to leave Seattle with its lovely folks (that’s probably why I was even too late for the check-in, my chance is 50:50 to have my luggage down in San Francisco). However, I am excited about the famous innovative spirit in the Silicon Valley which I will get to know for sure the first time tomorrw, while meeting with Henrik Bennetsen (Stanford Humanities Lab, organising the Metaverse U Conference or on Thursday with Mary Smaragdis (Marketing Director at Sun Microsystems.
Best Regards from California. Daniel
