Virtuelle Güter werden mit der forlaufenden Digitalisierung der Welt zunehmen. Meine Ausführungen dazu habe ich bereits im Post Was kostet ein virtueller Blumenstraus? dargelegt.

Die reinste Form der virtuellen Güter finden wir momentan wahrscheinlich im Second Life (SL). Ob und wieviele Leute im SL sind und welche Firmen dort sind oder wieder rausgehen ist eigentlich uninteressant. Interessant vielmehr sind die Findings aus SL. Auf Kzero habe ich einen Post gefunden, der analysiert, was Leute im SL anbieten (korreliert wahrscheinlich auch mit dem Verkauf). Hier die Top 3:

#1: Kleidung (35 %)
#2: Häuser & Gebäude (23 %)
#3: Avatar Accessoir (14 %)

Vom Hause Dreamworks kommt der grosse Animationsknaller 2008: Kung Fu Panda.

Im April 2007 war ich mit Roman Balzan von Swissopolis bei unserem Schweizer Freund Simon Otto (Head of Animation bei Dreamworks). Er hat uns schon angetönt, dass da eine grosse Geschichte von Dreamworks kommen wird! Jetzt seit einem Tag ist der Trailer draussen von Kung Fu Panda. Schaut euch das an:

Which only company might it be, where one has to sign an NDA before entering the building? No, I don’t want to tell anything bad about Google, because I could really experience the sympathetic culture they have within the company, which I think is very powerful and just cool. Thanks to Anna Bishop from Google, I could spend 15 minutes talking with John Hanke, Director of Google Earth & Maps, about the future of the 3D web!

I got to tell one other story: Today I was visiting Bruce Damer up to the hills above Silicon Valley: Bruce is one of the “grand daddies” of the avatar/virtual world movement, he also worked several years as an evangelist for several big IT companies and works now for NASA, is CEO of DigitalSpace Corporation and has many more interesting projects going.

If somebody has gathered the whole IT history of the last 50 years – physically as well as in his memory – than it must be Bruce. He showed me his whole museum of the computer history, so for example the “LINC”, actually the first computer with the possibility for the human being to interact directly. And then Bruce showed me the first original Business Plan of Apple, which was totally illegally printed on a XEROX Computer by this time, isn’t that cool? (See the picture) Well and then we’ve had a long chat about the future of the 3D web, thanks for all your valuable inputs Bruce!

By the way – I am curious about which 3D web application you do find the hottest, B2B apps for meetings? Virtual shopping? Social virtual worlds? Mirror worlds? Although it might not sound like this, but I am still very critical towards the idea that most of the 2D web applications are going 3D, because there is not everywhere the possibility to capture value or a benefit for the user with a 3D visualisation on the web, we have to face that. But I am sure there are a lot of great possibilities and I am sure that we are talking about an emerging market, which cannot that simplistic be defined, however.

I’ll tell next time about the Metaverse U Conference at Stanford University this weekend, and about meetings with Patrick Hogan, Project Manager at NASA Ames Research Center or with Emily Melton, Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson.

I actually don’t really know where to start this time, but to summarize my last week in the Silicon Valley: I got a an awful lot of more answers as well as a lot more questions, met with great people and had a lot of impressions, either in San Francisco, Foster City or Mountain View. So pictures tell more then a thousand words:

Down there are impressions from Foster City where I met with Andy and Karan from Scale Venture Partners (I actually promised to put both pictures on the Blog ). Andy sees the future of the 3D Web rather fragmented, which is not at all in common with the view of Philip Rosedale (Founder and CEO Linden Lab/Second Life) with whom I’ve had the great pleasure to chat today in their offices in San Francisco.

Apropos offices: The most awesome meeting room in the Bay Area is neither at Google nor at Linden Lab, it is in the offices of Three Rings Design. I met Daniel James Founder and CEO of Three Rings Design in their downtown office in San Francisco and when I wanted to sit down on a table, he suddenly pulled at an old-school bookcase and opened a secret kind of a back room, which was actually a fantastic meeting room (see the picture) where we’ve had a very interesting talk about the future of games, 3D and the web in general.

On Monday, I also met with Andrew Littlefield, founder of Doppelganger in San Francisco; they have an absolutely great approach towards social virtual environments, so it’s worth to check out their successful virtual world vSide.

As I try to put together different views in this project, either from the R&D side, the Business side, as well as from the Venture Capital side, I met the same day with a famous researcher in the field of virtual worlds and online games: I was talking to Nicolas Ducheneaut from the Computer Science Laboratory at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). So it was a great pleasure to listen to his experiences and expectations since he holds a rather academic perspective.

Da wir eine internationale Kundschaft haben, werden wir englisch bloggen. Das war es schon!

Gestern fand in der BEA Bern die Verleihung des Unternehmerpreise Espace Mittelland des Swiss Venture Club statt. Ich bin der Einladung von Manuel Ebner, CEO der BZ Bank, gefolgt. Er amtet auch in der hochkarätigen Jury (u.a. auch noch dabei Nicolas Berg (Red Alpine), Urs Althaus (CTI Start-up), Daniel Kusio (BVGroup Private Equity), Johan Schneider (Ammann Unternehmungen) etc.).

Der erste Eindruck war spektakulär; eine Riesenhalle mit über 2000 Gästen und eine Riesenbühne….Wow!

Nomminiert waren sechs Unternehmen aus dem Wirtschaftsraum Espace Mittelland. Gewonnen hat Cendres + Métaux SA aus Biel. Einst eine Giesserei, hat sich die Bieler Firma zu einem weltweit tätigen Zulieferer für die Zahntechnik und Uhrenindustrie gemausert. Gratulation!

Highlight für mich war auch das Interview mit dem Denner-Chef Philippe Gaydoul. Ich habe jetzt Philippe Gaydoul schon dreimal live erleben dürfen und er imponiert mir immer mehr. Bodenständig, direkt, unternehmerisch brilliant und auch trocken witzig! Unternehmer von dieser Sorte brauchen wir definitiv mehr in der Schweiz, dann kommt es gut!

Graffiti sind schon längst ein Bestandteil der Städtebilder geworden. Von den einen geliebt, von den anderen gehasst.
